Vayikra - Leviticus
23:15
"From the day following
the (first) rest day (of Pesach) 
- the day you bring the Omer 
as a wave-offering --
 you should count for yourselves seven weeks. 
(When you count them)

"You should count up until (but not including) fifty days, (i.e.) the day following the 
seventh week. 
(On the fiftieth day) you should bring (the first) meal-offering (from the) 
new (crop) to G-d..."		 When B'nai Yisroel,
[the Children of Israel]
were in the desert, they were told, by Moses, that he would return to them by the fortieth day - in the sixth hour. They miscalculated, and, as a result, built the Golden Calf. 
This abomination led to the shattering of the Luchois,		 The Ten Commandments, which, in turn, led to the death of the three-thousand men, who perished by the sword - for their participation in the idolatry.  

What happened to the women? They did not participate, at all. They contributed to the building of the Mishkan.
